After a flop season: Ex-ICEHL top scorer has a new employer!

Former ICEHL top scorer Matteo Gennaro has found a new club. The 29-year-old Italian-Canadian is moving to the DEL2 promoted team ECDC Memmingen Indians and is making a fresh start in Germany after a disappointing season at HC Bozen – this is reported by the German medium “Eisblog”.

Once a top player

Just over a year ago, Gennaro was considered one of the most dangerous offensive players in the ICEHL. In the Asiago jersey, the attacker became an absolute top performer and was one of the top scorers in the league. In the 2024/25 season, the 1.90 meter tall striker recorded a strong 51 points in 42 games and was the offensive heart of the Italians.

Move to Bolzano

However, the move to HC Bozen turned out to be a complete failure. In the past season, Gennaro fell far short of expectations and was only rarely able to make an impact. Instead of appearing as a difference player, the former WHL champion often disappeared into the shadows of his teammates. The numbers speak for themselves: just six points in 16 appearances represent a season that clearly has to be seen as a flop for the former Winnipeg Jets draft pick.

New start in Germany

Now the new start should be successful for the DEL2 promoted team ECDC Memmingen Indians. The Allgäu team is strengthening itself with a player who, despite his difficult months in Bolzano, still has enormous offensive potential. His strong years in the ECHL and ICEHL in particular show that Gennaro can make a difference at a higher level.

The transfer could turn out to be a real coup for Memmingen – provided the Canadian returns to the form with which he thrilled the fans in Asiago.
