After HC Pustertal’s dramatic overtime defeat in the fourth semi-final game of the ICE Hockey League against Olimpija Ljubljana, the focus of discussions was less on the result than on the referee’s performance. Coach Jason Jaspers found clear words after the end of the game, as “Sportnews” reports.
Clear criticism of the referees
The main focus was on the clear imbalance in penalty minutes. Pustertal was only awarded one power play, while they had to play outnumbered five times.
Jaspers vented his anger and indirectly criticized the referees’ line: “Five power plays against one. Imagine if it had been the other way around.”
The coach saw control slipping away, especially in overtime: “In overtime they could do whatever they wanted.”
Controversial scene shortly before the end
A decisive scene shortly before the game winner caused additional frustration. Henry Bowlby was brought down in a promising position, but no whistle was blown.
In retrospect, this situation may also have bothered Jaspers, although he focused on the big picture: “In the end, the penalty minutes made the difference.”
Proud of your own team
Despite all the criticism, the Canadian stood protectively in front of his team and praised their efforts in a difficult atmosphere. “I couldn’t be prouder of the players,” said Jaspers, adding: “We fought very hard today in a hostile environment.”
He also emphasized how close his team was to winning: “Despite this imbalance, we were a minute away from winning the game.”
Respect for the opponent
In addition to all the disappointment, Jaspers was also fair to the opponent from Ljubljana: “Ljubljana didn’t let up today, kept fighting and offered strong ice hockey.” Olimpija coach Ben Cooper was also satisfied with his team’s performance: “I’m not only proud of the players because we won, but above all because of their performance.”
Series remains open
HC Pustertal missed out on making it to the final early. Instead, the series continues.
