An actually peaceful charity game
New York City got completely out of hand over the weekend. During the traditional ice hockey duel between the police and the fire department, a violent mass brawl broke out on the ice in front of thousands of spectators.
The venue was sold out
UBS Arenahome of the
New York Islanders. There was already tension in the air during the game: both teams didn’t give each other anything, and minor scuffles had to be settled by the referees during the game.
But after the final whistle the situation escalated completely. Players from both teams stormed onto the ice and engaged in a wild brawl. Videos on social media show chaotic scenes with fists flying and many people involved clashing.
The event actually had a good star: it was the 52nd edition of the charity game, in which money is collected annually for charitable purposes. Despite the escalation, according to those involved, the game was overall calmer than in some previous years.
