Ice Hockey World Cup and an ICEHL team: Vorarlberg is planning a mega indoor project!

A major project is intended to permanently change the future of Vorarlberg ice hockey. EHC Lustenau boss Herbert Oberscheider confirmed that the plans for a modern multi-purpose hall in the Rhine Valley are making further progress and have recently gained significant momentum. The project has now been specifically developed and a possible location has already been considered – details, however, remain under wraps for strategic reasons.

The planned arena should hold at least 10,000 spectators and serve much more than just ice hockey. The aim is a multifunctional event hall that, in addition to sporting events, will also accommodate international concerts and major events. According to Oberscheider, such an infrastructure is currently missing in the entire Lake Constance region, which is why large events are currently taking place at other locations. The new hall could close this gap and at the same time create new economic impulses for tourism and the region.

The project would also be enormously important from a sporting perspective. A modern arena is considered a central prerequisite for establishing professional ice hockey in Vorarlberg again in the long term and keeping talented players in the country. In the future, major international events such as an ice hockey world championship would even be conceivable.

Professional ice hockey team and ice hockey world championship?

Oberscheider explained to the “Neue” that the foundation for a restart of Vorarlberg ice hockey was laid with “Rheintal Future”, an all-Vorarlberg youth concept. And if the hall plans are implemented, they would be ready for a professional ice hockey team in Lustenau (“But not as EHC Lustenau, that is made very clear”) and want to skip the AlpsHL directly. “We in Vorarlberg have been thinking in dimensions that are far too small for far too long – and have made ourselves small. It’s long past time to think in large dimensions,” says the creator.

Despite the ambitious project, one thing is clear: not all hurdles have been overcome yet. Oberscheider emphasizes the importance of discretion and careful planning – but is convinced that the project is “more alive than ever” and has the potential to sustainably change the status of sport in Vorarlberg.
