EWHL: Sabers St. Pölten grab the title!

The Sabers St. Pölten also prevailed in the second leg of the EWHL final against Aisulu Almaty and were crowned champions of the European Women’s Hockey League for the seventh time. The Lower Austrians managed to take revenge for the narrowly lost final last season. MAC Budapest won the duel for third place against the KSV Highlanders. Although the Highlanders won the second leg, they were unable to overcome the three-goal deficit from the first leg.

The Sabers St. Pölten started strong in the second leg of the final against Aisulu Almaty, hungry for their seventh EWHL title – the repeat of last season’s final. With a 3-1 win in the first leg, Tamina Schall also opened the scoring on Sunday. It was Schall who scored the first goal in the first leg of the final. Just a minute later, Verena Haselsteiner made it 2-0 for the Lower Austrians. Aisulu was able to shorten the score in the middle third, but the Sabers acted cleverly in the final section and didn’t let the championship title be taken away from them: Madison Laberge made the final score 3-1 and thus secured the Sabers St. Pölten’s seventh championship title.

Whether the Sabers can complete the double – i.e. win the win2day Austrian Women’s Hockey League in addition to the EWHL title – will be decided on April 3rd and 4th at the AWHL Final-4 in the Merkur Arena in Graz. Tickets for the final tournament are available here
