For Michael Schiechl, the Graz99ers are aiming for his third championship title in his career. But even if he wins the championship, an end to his career would not be an issue.
The Graz99ers are still eight wins short of the crown, their first ICEHL title. The semi-finals against Fehervar start tomorrow and Michael Schiechl would be the “icing on the cake”. He began his professional career with Graz in 2008 and returned in 2020 after years in Salzburg and Vienna. And at some point he will finish it in Graz, but not this summer.
“People often say that you should stop when it’s best. But I still have a contract and I also really want to play ice hockey,” the 36-year-old told the “Kronen Zeitung”. He doesn’t lack goals: “You can set new goals. Like defending your title, for example.” Participation in the CHL should also be attractive.
Schiechl chasing records?
In addition, the passionate beekeeper is currently in fourth place on the all-time list with 975 ICEHL missions. Unless something unforeseeable happens, the “1,000” will fall next season. And who knows whether this record isn’t still a goal. Currently ahead of him are John Hughes (999 appearances), Thomas Raffl (1,017) and Thomas Koch (1,023).
