Showdown for the championship in the Austrian Ice Hockey League, Part III: The EHC Lustenau met the KSV Kangaroos on Saturday in the all-important third game of the best-of-three series in the Rheinhalle in front of 2,200 fans. For the third and final time, the final hit was introduced with the atmospheric Austrian national anthem before the start of the game. The Lions had their first majority in the second minute, eight seconds before the numerical superiority expired, Lucas Haberl pushed the disc that was exposed after a commotion in front of the Kapfenberg goal over the line to make it 1-0 (4th). The Vorarlbergers acted superiorly with their early lead behind them. As the first third continued, the Styrians ventured more and more into the offensive zone. Then there was a moment of shock when Maximilian Ramsbacher shot from just behind the blue line and his KSV colleague Pierre Graf got the puck with full force in the face. Unfortunately for Graf the game was over. The Kapfenbergers had their first power play opportunity after just over ten minutes of play: Lukas Telsnig shot from the right faceoff circle and Florian Hoppl used the rebound from the slot to equalize 1:1 (11th). Almost six minutes before the end of the third there were the first emotions, Maximilian Ramsbacher and Jonas Kutzer exchanged the first pleasantries. With every change the crackling in the Rheinhalle could be felt more and more.
At the beginning of the second period, the hosts also had an early advantage game, but despite the pressure phase, they did not score another goal. Lustenau was closer to the second goal, but KSV goalie Felix Nußbacher didn’t allow anything in the first minutes of the middle period. The Mürztalers also occasionally came in front of EHC keeper Felix Beck’s box, but didn’t act with enough force. Lustenau celebrated the supposed opening goal, but the referee team refused to recognize Robin Wüstner’s goal. Three seconds after the advantage expired, there was a wild commotion in front of the Kapfenberg goal and Chris D’Alvise poked the disc over the line to make it 2-1 (34th). KSV keeper Felix Nußbacher had to leave the ice injured immediately afterwards, and Oliver Zirngast took care of the box for him. With another majority, the Vorarlbergers waited patiently for the chance, Dominic Haberl skillfully turned with the puck and made it 3-1 from close range (37th). Towards the end, the Kapfenbergers still had the majority, a short phase of which they even had five against three on the ice, but they couldn’t score the next goal. In the first nine minutes of the final third, the Kangaroos played almost entirely outnumbered. In a 5:3 superiority, Chris D’Alvise scored from the slot to make it 4:1 (49th). The Draschkowitz brothers brought the Kapfenbergers back into the game: Lukas Draschkowitz took the puck behind the goal and played to Christoph Draschkowitz, who reduced the score to 2:4 (51′). The next combination of brothers scored the next goal for the Mürztal team: Manuel Trost played to Stefan Trost, who made it 3-4 from the slot (52nd). Just under six minutes before the end, Chris D’Alvise deflected a shot from Jonas Kutzer to make it 5-3 for Lustenauer (55th). In the end, the Styrians moved goalie Oliver Zirngast for a sixth field player. EHC Lustenau managed 5:3 over time, won the best-of-three series 2:1 and is Austrian champion of the Austrian Ice Hockey League for the first time. With a total of over 7,200 fans in Lustenau and Kapfenberg, the final series provided impressive backdrops with intense and exciting games.
