EC Red Bull Salzburg has its back against the wall in the quarterfinals of the ICE Hockey League. After three defeats in a row against HC Pustertal, the South Tyroleans are only missing one win for promotion – but for the Red Bulls, everything is on the line.
Before game four of the series in Bruneck, the starting position is clear: Salzburg is doomed to win, otherwise the reigning series champions’ season would end prematurely. Historically, it is extremely rare to make up for a 3-0 deficit in a playoff series.
However, the people of Mozartstadt have not yet completely written themselves off. According to the club, striker Benjamin Nissner emphasizes that the team continues to believe in the turnaround.
“We’re not giving up. It’s 3-0 for Pustertal, but that’s just gone from our heads and we’re making sure we get our game back. We can’t be too offensive and have to pay more attention to the defense. The team is hungry, everyone can give a little more and that just motivates us even more,” said Nissner.
A look at the past shows that Salzburg has been able to turn around several series after being down 2-0. However, the Red Bulls have never been able to turn around a 3-0 deficit. Only in the 2021 semifinals against EC-KAC was Salzburg able to reduce the score to 1:3 after a 0:3 before finally being eliminated from the series with 1:4.
