VSV has its back to the wall in the quarterfinals. After three defeats in a row, Villach is already 0-3 behind in the series against Graz. In the fourth game on Tuesday in front of their home crowd, the Carinthians are doomed to win – otherwise the season is over.
For VSV striker John Hughes the situation is clear. “We have to score more than one goal,” emphasized the 38-year-old to the “Kronen Zeitung”. In previous duels with Graz, Villach found it extremely difficult offensively. Only one goal was scored in six of the last seven games against the Styrians.
“It’s not for nothing that their defense was the best in the regular season,” says Hughes about the opponent. Nevertheless, the Canadian doesn’t want to give up hope yet. “Of course we’ll keep fighting. But after the good series against Linz, I thought it would be longer in the quarter-finals.”
That’s precisely why everything should be tried again in the fourth game in front of our own audience. “It could be our last home game of the season – that would be sad for us,” said Hughes.
