Over, over: 254-time ICEHL keeper ends his career!

After 19 years in the country’s top division, goalkeeper Thomas Höneckl is ending his active ice hockey career. The 36-year-old celebrated three championships with Salzburg and was one of the league’s local cult figures in Graz, Villach and Linz.

Thomas Höneckl celebrated his last appearance as an active ice hockey professional at the beginning of March with remarkable parades and as a deserving man of the match against the title contenders from Graz. The Salzburg native is thus ending a remarkable career of 19 seasons in the Austrian Bundesliga. A look at the goalie’s record shows his enormous loyalty behind the numbers of 254 games. The now 36-year-old had to share the key position between the posts throughout his entire career. But no matter which of his four stations in the win2day ICE Hockey League and who he had to fight for minutes with, he was always there when he was needed. The father of soon to be two children in the steel city formed a dynamic duo with Rasmus Tirronen in recent years and found his home with the Linzers in five seasons.

He played more than a quarter of his games in the country’s top division in black, orange and petrol and, with his inimitable style, was an indispensable part of the dressing room. On a sporting level, the left-handed catcher celebrated his greatest successes with his hometown club, where he completed the Red Bull Academy. He was part of the Eisbullen when they won the championship three times and was able to lift the Karl Nedwed Trophy at the end. After his debut in the then Erste Bank Eishockey Liga in the 2007/08 season, he dared to move to Villach in 2012 and to the Graz99ers three years later. In 2021, he finally took over number 33 in the steel city and was also able to represent his home country internationally six times. As a big highlight, he experienced the World Cup up close in 2024.
