The dramatic scenes surrounding KAC defender Jordan Murray have caused great consternation in Austrian ice hockey. This also brought back memories for a former VSV player: ex-Adler striker Martin Ulmer knows from his own experience how quickly everything can change in professional sport.
The Vorarlberger, who played for VSV from 2019 to 2021, experienced a moment of medical shock himself. In November 2022 – just a few hours after a game – the then Innsbruck striker suddenly collapsed during breakfast the next morning. “I suddenly felt completely sick, I got a bad headache, then my eyes went black,” the now 37-year-old tells the “Kronen Zeitung”.
Ulmer was then flown to the hospital by helicopter – initially with the suspicion of a heart attack. After numerous examinations, he was able to leave the hospital that same evening. “Nothing was found on me – until today. It was probably a circulatory collapse.”
In terms of sport, the striker was back on the ice surprisingly quickly: just a week later, Ulmer was playing in a game again. However, the aftereffects stayed with him for a long time. “It was very difficult for me. Every time I exerted myself, I was worried that something would happen again. Even when I was climbing stairs or driving a car. The fear was always there.”
That’s precisely why the scenes surrounding KAC defender Jordan Murray were particularly close to him. “Only time heals wounds. It took me years to process all of this.”
