The Red Bull Hockey Juniors celebrated a 3-2 home win in the first quarter-final duel with Val Gardena. Salzburg scored all three goals in just 64 seconds on Wednesday evening. The second game of the best-of-seven series in Wolkenstein follows on Friday.
The Juniors had more of the game for long periods, but had to work hard for their first win in the series. After a goalless opening third, the South Tyroleans took the lead through Moncada: after a face-off, the striker scored from close range with a backhand. But less than a minute later the home team managed to equalize – Juhola scored in the power play to make it 1-1. Shortly afterwards, the Juniors captured the puck in the attacking third, whereupon Wurzer made it 2-1 with a rebound. Exactly 64 seconds after the 1:1, Kogler made it 3:1 with a strong individual performance. The score remained that way until the final phase, when Schiavone reduced the deficit for the guests in the 57th minute. Val Gardena then increased the pressure, but the juniors successfully defended their narrow lead and secured a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. The second duel takes place on Friday in Wolkenstein.
