ICEHL: Is coach Kevin Constantine leaving the Vienna Capitals?

After the Vienna Capitals’ surprising end to the season against Fehervar, there is a central personnel question at the Vienna ICEHL club: Will coach Kevin Constantine stay beyond the summer – or will his time in Vienna already end again?

The 67-year-old US coach was only hired in October as a kind of firefighter after his predecessor Gerry Fleming handed over the team in a difficult sporting situation. Constantine quickly stabilized the Capitals and led the team significantly upwards in the second half of the season.

Despite this comeback, in the end it was not enough to make it into the top 6, which qualified directly for the quarter-finals. The bitter end against Fehervar came in the pre-play-off – a 0-1 loss in the decisive home game ended the season abruptly.

This now raises the question of the coach’s future. According to “Kurier”, Constantine’s contract was only a short-term solution and, according to club management, it is still unclear whether he even wants to stay. At the same time, the club must decide whether the experienced coach is the right man for a long-term rebuild with the aim of permanently leading the Capitals back into the top four of the league.

In addition to sporting considerations, the economic dimension also plays a role. Due to the early elimination, the Viennese missed out on several lucrative home games in the quarter-finals – against possible opponents like Graz or the KAC, at least two home games would have brought in several hundred thousand euros in income.
