The ice hockey world mourns the loss of former NHL professional and Stanley Cup winner Troy Murray. The long-time player and later TV and radio analyst died at the age of just 63 after a long battle with cancer.
Murray played in the National Hockey League for a total of 15 years and was considered a defining personality of the Chicago Blackhawks for decades. The forward was selected in the third round of the 1980 NHL Draft and spent the majority of his career in Chicago.
Murray experienced his most successful sporting season in 1985/86. At that time, he scored 45 goals and 54 assists – a total of 99 points – and won the prestigious Frank J. Selke Trophy, which is awarded annually to the league’s best defensive forward.
Murray celebrated the greatest triumph of his career in the 1995/96 season. In his final year in the NHL, he won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche.
In total, Murray played 915 NHL games and collected 230 goals and 354 assists. In addition to Chicago and Colorado, he also played for the Winnipeg Jets, Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins. In the playoffs he contributed another 43 points.
After his active career ended, Murray remained loyal to ice hockey. From 1998 he worked as an analyst and commentator on the Blackhawks and became a steady voice for the fans of the traditional club. Together with radio commentator John Wiedeman, he also covered the Blackhawks’ three championships in 2010, 2013 and 2015.
In 2021, Murray was diagnosed with cancer. Despite intensive treatment, he returned to the microphone several times and commented on games.
