Hydro Fehervar AV19 secured the last ticket for the playoff quarter-finals with a 1-0 away win at the Vienna Capitals. Trevor Cheek scored the only goal. Rasmus Reijola showed off more than 30 saves.
In the crucial pre-playoff duel in Vienna, Fehérvár took the lead after just five minutes – and while outnumbered: After a quick counterattack, Trevor Cheek scored 1-0 with a direct pass following preparatory work from Hari. Towards the end of the third, AVS goalie Reijola was challenged and saved his team from equalizing. Fehérvár went into the first break with the narrow lead. After the restart, the home team increased the pressure and were unlucky with a shot from the pole. Reijola also remained invincible in the Caps’ second power play. Early in the third period the picture was repeated: this time Koschek was denied by the Finnish goalkeeper from a promising position. As the game progressed, the guests repeatedly had dangerous opportunities, but Vienna’s goalie Cowley also showed his class. In the final phase, the Capitals threw everything forward again, but Souch and Co. still couldn’t find a way to counter Reijola. The Hungarians maintained a narrow lead over time and thus completed the field of participants in the quarter-finals.
