The EC VSV is in the playoff quarterfinals ICE Hockey League facing a big challenge. Villach will face the winner of the regular round in the best-of series Graz99ers.
The fact that the Styrians would choose VSV as their opponent came as a surprise to those responsible in Villach. Managing Director Martin Winkler was actually expecting a different scenario.
“Because of Fehervar’s result in Vienna, I didn’t actually expect Graz to pick us anyway. We would have really been looking forward to a derby,” Winkler told the “Kleine Zeitung”.
Instead of a Carinthian derby, the league leaders are now waiting for Villach. For Winkler, the distribution of roles is clear, but he still sees opportunities for his team: “So it will be a classic David versus Goliath series in which we can and will be a very unpleasant opponent.”
According to Winkler, the VSV has stabilized significantly in the past few weeks. The team has made great progress, especially defensively. At the same time, the managing director also sees a positive development on the offensive.
“We have strengthened ourselves extremely defensively in the last few weeks, but we are also a different team offensively than we were last time,” Winkler continued.
Another factor could be Villach’s physical style of play. “We can also do a lot with the physicality and are looking forward to a long series.”
