Escalation? – ICEHL threatens the association with severe consequences!

In Austrian ice hockey there is a threat of a massive conflict between ICE Hockey League and that Austrian Ice Hockey Association. The background is differences over the future of the import player regulation and the cooperation agreement between the league and the association, which expires in the summer of 2027 – this is reported by the “Kronen Zeitung”.

The league’s clubs in particular see an urgent need for action with the current regulations. Currently, both non-EU players and EU players are considered so-called imports. From the league’s perspective, this regulation is economically and legally problematic. Several clubs are therefore demanding that players from the ICEHL nations should no longer be considered foreigners in the future.

League manager Christian Feichtinger emphasizes that the sport has changed and the league must respond to it. There is also the opinion within the clubs that the league should determine its own sporting conditions.

Reduction of legionnaires as a point of contention

The association, however, pursues a different goal. For ÖEHV President Klaus Hartmann The focus is on promoting local players. A reduction in the number of imported players should give Austrian talents more ice time and ensure the long-term quality of the national team.

If no agreement is reached, a possible Plan B is already circulating within the league. Accordingly, the league could be organized under the flag of the Italian association in the future. All that would have to be done is to found a sports company in Tarvisio, Italy. Such a step would mean a historic break between the league and the association.
