In the North American ice hockey league National Hockey League, a harsh punishment is making headlines: Superstar Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins has been suspended for five games after a brutal scene.
The incident occurred in the game against the Buffalo Sabers when Malkin attacked defender Rasmus Dahlin with a violent slash. The action happened early in the second period and immediately caused excitement on the ice. The referees reacted immediately: Malkin first received a penalty for cross-checking, then a major penalty for the slash and a game-misconduct penalty.
The league confirmed the consequences shortly afterwards. The NHL’s Department of Player Safety suspended the Russian center for five games without pay. Due to his average annual salary, Malkin loses around $158,854 – the money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
For the Penguins, the suspension is a bitter blow in the final stretch of the season. Malkin continues to be one of the team’s most important offensive players and has been one of the franchise’s defining figures for years.
