Graz boss Jerich on Bailen’s departure: “We even agreed with a handshake”

Top defender Nick Bailen will leave the Graz 99ers after this season. Rumors have been circulating for some time about the 36-year-old moving to the Austrian capital, and now President Herbert Jerich has confirmed the separation after the season to the “Kronen Zeitung”.

“We even agreed with a handshake. But then unexpected demands came, after which we no longer agreed,” explains Jerich to the “Kronen Zeitung”. Despite Graz’s efforts to keep Bailen with contract improvements and individual offers – such as childcare places for his children – the defender could not be persuaded to reach a final agreement.

Bailen has played a key role in the 99ers’ success this season. With the team he secured a ticket to the Champions Hockey League for the first time since 2019, but the future of the Styrians’ highest-scoring defensive player now probably lies in Vienna. Despite everything, Jerich is confident about the rest of the season: “Nick is a top player. When he’s fit, he’ll give his top performance again. He wants to become champion – just like all of us!”
