Next Austrian ice rink to be rescued!

In the Frohnleiten There are signs of a positive turnaround for regional ice sports: after intensive negotiations, the rescue of the traditional ice rink is apparently imminent. An investor was found to make the construction of a modern air ice rink possible – this is what MeinBezirk reports. Besides Radenthein, it is the second hall that will probably be “saved” within a very short time!

Just a few months ago, the news about the impending closure of the existing hall caused excitement in the region. Current operations were no longer financially viable; instead, the hall should be converted into a trendy sports facility. For a long time it remained unclear how ice sports would continue – now a solution seems to be in sight.

New air ice rink planned

A new air ice rink is to be built right next to the existing hall. The property is provided by the municipality. The project was significantly driven forward by a specially founded rescue committee led by Walter Gschwandner, honorary chairman of the EC Frohnleiten Black Panthers.

A partner was finally found in the investor Elitsa Polizoeva who will make the project financially possible. An official statement from the community is still pending, but discussions and meetings are already in full swing.

Criticism of a lack of transparency

Not all political representatives are completely satisfied. The Green local councilor Alexander Fleck is calling for more transparency around the decisions made so far. He is particularly critical of the long-term rental of the existing hall to a ball sports operator and the planned sale of the ice rink equipment.

From his point of view, a possible continued use of the existing infrastructure should at least have been examined.

Peggau also in the race

At the same time, the market town is also coming along Peggau came into play as a possible location. Mayor Christoph Pirstinger is holding discussions about an alternative use of the hall. However, one thing is clear: two locations will not be possible – financing continues to be a challenge.
