VSV captain Alexander Rauchwald is Carinthia’s new ice hockey superstar. For the 45th time, listeners of Radio Kärnten’s “Carinthian ice hockey magazine” had the opportunity to vote for their most popular player. In the final, the VSV striker clearly won 2-0 in the best-of-three mode against Simeon Schwinger from EC KAC – ORF reports.
The superstar election has a long tradition in Carinthia. It goes back to the 1981/82 season. A total of 27 EC KAC players and 18 VSV players have been honored so far. The record winner is Martin Schumnig (KAC) with four titles.
Alexander Rauchwald is a real Villach native. Trained in the Draustadt, he celebrated his debut in the “Adler” fighting team in 2011 and also scored his first goal. In 2014, the now 32-year-old moved to Salzburg, where he won two Austrian championship titles with the Red Bulls. After a short stint in Sweden, he returned to VSV in 2021 and is now captain of the team.
Rauchwald also demonstrated great strength off the ice: he successfully beat cancer (lymph gland cancer). However, he is currently out until the end of the season due to a torn cruciate ligament.
