Milan is about to return to the big ice hockey stage. An entry into the coming ICEHL season is becoming more concrete.
As association president Andrea Gios announced, the Italian ice sports association is working on founding a new top team in the Lombardy metropolis. The aim is to permanently establish high-class ice hockey in Milan after the Olympic Games. Discussions with investor groups, particularly from North America, are already underway.
Already next season in the ICEHL?
Participation in the ICE Hockey League is being considered. According to Gios, the new team could be registered as early as next season: “We will start discussions next week. Because it would be ideal if a team could join by March 15th,” Gios told “Sportnews.bz”. ICEHL Vice President Erich Falkensteiner had already confirmed interest in a club from Milan in December.
New ice rink being planned
At the same time, the construction of a new ice stadium is planned. Initially, a temporary arena with at least 4,000 seats is to be built on the exhibition grounds in Rho; a permanent solution is planned later. The aim of this project is to build on Milan’s great ice hockey tradition and to re-establish the city as an important location in European ice hockey in the long term.
