In terms of sport, the Innsbruck Haie are under pressure after two disappointing seasons at the bottom of the table. In order to become more competitive again, the club has submitted an application to the league: the last two placed – alongside Innsbruck Pioneers Vorarlberg – should be allowed to sign two additional import players in the future.
Ten legionnaires are currently allowed per ICE team. While the Austrian Ice Hockey Association is striving to reduce this number with regard to the national team, Innsbruck argues with economic realities. “As a small club, we are very dependent on it,” Hanschitz explains to the “Tiroler Tageszeitung” and refers to the difficult situation of being able to finance top local players. At a league meeting at the beginning of March, both the general import regulations and the Innsbruck application will be discussed.
Squad planning takes place in the background
Plans are also in full swing off the ice. Head coach Ryan Kinasewich indicates changes: “We got a little bit done during the break, but we won’t communicate it until after the season.”
The first personnel decisions have already been made: Of the two players loaned to Zell am See, only attacker Kilian Rappold is returning for the game against Budapest. Defender Devin Steffler, on the other hand, will probably no longer play a role in Innsbruck’s uniform – perhaps not this season.
