The Winter Olympics will start in Milan and Cortina in a few weeks. Co-favorites Canada announced their lineup for the men’s ice hockey tournament yesterday – with one or two surprises.
Canada starts with a duel against the Czech Republic on February 12th. Switzerland and France are also waiting in the group phase. The Gold Medal Game is scheduled for February 22nd – in this, of course, the maple leaves want to reach for the coveted precious metal again.
A 25-man squad for the title fights in Italy was announced yesterday evening. As with all top nations, there are players who surprisingly were not nominated. For Canada, for example, cracks like Connor Bedard, Mark Scheifele or Mackenzie Blackwood were not taken into account. Youngster Macklin Celebrini, who is the NHL’s third-best scorer with 62 points, made it into the squad. Jordan Binnington is also back in the squad, which can be at least a little surprising given his very mixed season in St. Louis.
