The first round of the Alps Hockey League in the new year is on the program on Friday. The leading trio Sisak, Juniors and Zell am See are challenged away from home. At the same time, the race for the top 5 continues to heat up.
HDD Jesenice – KHL Sisak
Jesenice suffered a narrow defeat against Zell am See in its last game of the year. Sisak, however, defended his lead in the table with a clear win against Unterland. The Croatians cracked the 100-goal mark, while the Slovenians had the third-weakest offense in the league with just 79 goals. Sisak won the first duel of the season, but shortly before Christmas Jesenice had the upper hand at home 6:3.
Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan – Red Bull Hockey Juniors
While Vipiteno suffered a 2:5 defeat in Asiago on the last matchday of the year, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors returned after a break of over a week with a clear 7:1 home win against Cortina. The Broncos are not one of the best home teams in the league, but they have celebrated four wins in their last five home games. Salzburg are in second place both in the overall and away tables. The first two duels of the season went to the Red Bulls.
HC Gherdeina valgardena.it – EK The Zeller Eisbären
Val Gardena recently scored a point in Kitzbühel, while Zell am See won against Ritten in the shootout. The South Tyroleans are the third best home team in the league and collected 29 of their total 35 points in front of their home crowd. However, the Zeller Eisbären are the best away team in the league. In the season duel the score is 1:1 – both teams won their home games.
Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel – EC Bregenzerwald
Both teams returned to winning ways on Tuesday. While Kitzbühel defended its fourth place in the table, Bregenzerwald stayed in touch with the Masterround places. The Tyroleans won ten of their 14 home games, while the Vorarlbergers were defeated three times in a row away from home. In the season duel the score is 1:1 – both teams prevailed at home.
HC Meran/o Pircher – HC Migross Asiago
Meran has regularly alternated between wins and losses in the last nine games – most recently there was a defeat against Bregenzerwald. Asiago improved to fifth place with its third win in a row. Ryan Valentini (51 points) and Nicholas Porco (43) continue to lead the league-wide scoring list. New signing Tommaso Traversa is also in strong form: he scored four times in four games and will now face his former team. Here too the score in the season duel is 1:1, both teams won away from home.
Hockey Unterland Cavaliers – Rittner Buam SkyAlps
While the Cavaliers had no chance against the league leaders, the decimated Ritten team got at least one point on Tuesday in Zell am See. The two-time AHL champion fell out of the top five, but is only one point behind fourth place. The bottom of the table, Unterland, has recently shown itself to be defensively vulnerable and has conceded 22 goals in the last four games. In the season duel the score is 1:1 – both with away wins.
