Back in March we reported on a possible release clause for KAC defender Thimo Nickl. Now there are new details about the future of the Austrian international – and a move abroad seems to remain a realistic scenario.
Strong World Cup performances arouse interest
As the “Kronen Zeitung” reports, Nickl is currently attracting attention with strong performances at the World Cup in Switzerland. The 24-year-old is one of the most noticeable defenders in the Austrian national team and is likely to attract more international attention.
This could become a problem for the EC-KAC in the summer. As is well known, the Defender has an exit clause for abroad.
Change only under clear conditions
However, leaving Klagenfurt only seems to be an option under certain conditions. According to the report, only a move to a top division should be of interest to Nickl.
According to player agent Peter Kasper, a commitment in the second Swedish league or in the ECHL in North America is not an issue. This makes it clear: If Nickl leaves the KAC, he will only do so for a top league that is attractive in terms of sport.
KAC hopes to stay
The Austrian record champions are naturally watching the situation with concern. KAC general manager Oliver Pilloni told the “Krone”: “That would be bitter, but this danger always exists.”
Since his return to Klagenfurt, Nickl has quickly developed into a mainstay of the defense. In the last two ICEHL seasons, the right-handed shooter collected strong offensive values and also impressed with his physical presence and international experience.
The decision could come in the summer
Whether there will actually be a change remains unclear at the moment. However, it seems clear that if an offer comes in from a top European league or a first-class North American league, the situation could quickly get worse.
