First defeat: Switzerland overruns Austria!

In the fourth game of the Ice Hockey World Championship, Austria suffered its first defeat. Switzerland presented itself in overwhelming form in front of its home crowd and defeated the ÖEHV team 9-0.

10,000 fans, including around 9,800 Swiss, created a deafening atmosphere and could hardly stop singing and celebrating the goal at the start of the game. Theo Rochette, Timo Meier, Nico Hischier and Damien Riat made the Swiss Life Arena shake in the power play.

Even without Vinzenz Rohrer and Dominic Zwerger, who were rested, Austria didn’t hide and created chances, but the Swiss were clearly the team that set the tone and stayed that way.

In the middle of the second period, Hischier increased the score to 6-0 on the power play and Calvin Thurkauf. Roger Bader took the hitherto hapless David Kickert, who was not to blame for all six goals conceded, off the ice and let Florian Vorauer take over. But he also had to reach behind himself for the first time after just over two minutes on the ice.

Despite a 7-0 lead, the Swiss made no move to slow down and played real “tiki-taka ice hockey”. With great success. While Austria fought for the consolation goal, Damien Riat and Christoph Bertschy scored the final points for the hosts.

Austria is now enjoying a two-day break and it is urgently needed. Four games in five days took a toll. The next opponent is Germany on Saturday, can be seen live at 8:20 p.m. on ORF 1.
