Next departure: Head coach leaves the ICEHL team!

The next departure from the Pioneers Vorarlberg is fixed: Head coach Johannes Nygård is now also leaving the ICEHL team and moving to Germany for the coming season
EHC Freiburg
. The Finnish coach was officially introduced as the DEL2 club’s new head coach on Thursday.

After several personnel changes, the Pioneers are now also losing their coach. Nygård only worked as head coach in Vorarlberg last season. In Freiburg, the 39-year-old will form a new team together with assistant coach Maximilian Deichstetter.

Three years in Vorarlberg

Nygard joined the Pioneers Vorarlberg for the 2023/24 season and was assistant coach to head coach Dylan Stanley for the first two years, who now works in the NLA at HC Davos. After his departure before the 2025/26 season, the Finn took over the head coaching position in the country.

Tray Tuomie was also a topic

Interesting: There was also an ex-EC VSV-Coach
Tray Tuomie
been considered a possible candidate. Ultimately, the people of Breisgau decided on Nygård.

Another prominent loss

In its broadcast, the EHC Freiburg spoke of a “clear game idea” and a modern philosophy that the Finn should bring with him. For the Pioneers, the change still means uncertainty.

Voices

Johannes Nygård with initial interview: “I’m really looking forward to the task in Freiburg and to working with the team, the staff and the fans. The EHC Freiburg is a location rich in tradition with great potential. Together we want to develop a team that performs with passion, structure and identification.”
