For Austria, the Ice Hockey World Cup starts in Switzerland on May 15th – will be played in Zurich and Friborg. The tournament will be particularly emotional for the team boss
Roger Baderwho has been looking after Austria for ten years and is virtually experiencing the World Cup on his own doorstep.
The 61-year-old Swiss is as calm as usual before the tournament, but admits that the World Cup in his home country is something special. Although his home is only a few minutes away from the team hotel, he will of course stay with the team.
They are hoping for reinforcements from overseas
After the team camp in Klagenfurt, Austria travels via Feldkirch to the World Cup headquarters in Zurich. They are still hoping for reinforcements: NHL legionnaires
Vincent Rohrer
signals readiness, but is still waiting for the release
Montreal Canadiens. “He would like to come. The chances are 50:50,” Bader told the “Crown newspaper“.
David Reinbacher
However, he has already been ordered to the NHL – the Montreal Canadiens are currently in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and the Vorarlberger could be used if someone in the Habs’ first team gets injured.
Bader and his coaching team have already prepared everything in Zurich – even the changing room was allowed to be selected. The team boss is convinced that the supervisors will ensure a perfect World Cup atmosphere.
Personally something special
In terms of sport, the World Cup for Austria begins on Saturday against Great Britain. The duel against Switzerland on May 20th is likely to be particularly emotional for Bader – not only because of the home game, but also because one of his grandchildren celebrates his birthday that day. Support could also come from his family, including son Thierry, a professional with the Zurich Lions.
