Many years ago, Canadian Mario Scalzo defended in the Erste Bank Ice Hockey League, and now his active career could be coming to an end.
Scalzo started his “European career” in Salzburg in 2008 and until last season he defended exclusively on European ice. His first stop? EC Red Bull Salzburg, for whom he had 40 points and a whopping 116 penalty minutes in 47 games – making him the Bulls’ defender with the highest points. Only Benoit Gratton (162), Andrej Tavzelj (134), Greg Kuznik (123), Matthias Iberer (120) and Sean Brown (119) spent more time in the cooler back then.
But after just one season it was over and Scalzo moved to the DEL, where he once again demonstrated his offensive qualities for the Adler Mannheim.
Return to the EBEL
After guest appearances in Biel, Bern and Turku, Scalzo returned to the EBEL in 2012 and put on the Moser Medical Graz99ers jersey for two years. He played 69 games this season for the Murstadt team and collected 31 points. Between 2015 and 2019 he was only on the ice for one season, only returning for further seasons in 2019.
Consistency in the DEL2
After one season for the Huskies from Kassel, he spent the last six years with the Eispiren Crimmitschau. As the club from Thuringia announced, no new contract offer was made to the veteran and both sides are now going their separate ways. It is currently uncertain whether Mario Scalzo’s active career will continue.
