After the Graz99ers’ historic title win in the ICE Hockey League, league managing director Christian Feichtinger gave the “Kurier” an initial review of the season – and addressed both positive developments and challenges.
Winning the title as a signal to the league
With the clear 4-0 final win against HC Pustertal, the Graz team have finally established themselves at the top of the league. For Feichtinger it is clear: Graz has become a “big player” – not least thanks to a strong environment and an extremely committed president. The success should also have a signaling effect: the other clubs are now required to follow suit in terms of sport and structure.
Positive numbers, but short playoffs
The economic trend is also pointing upwards. After an increase in spectators of 13 percent last year, the league was able to increase again by six percent in the regular season. Feichtinger, however, is critical of the sometimes one-sided play-off series. Many duels were decided early on – from a league perspective, longer series would have been desirable.
Question marks around Vorarlberg and Milan
The future of the Pioneers Vorarlberg remains a factor of uncertainty. The club is struggling with financial problems and a decision about the future is expected to be made by the end of April. At the same time, Milan’s application process for possible entry into the league is underway. A final decision is expected in early June.
Discussions with the association are imminent
There are also important topics off the ice. The cooperation agreement with the Austrian Ice Hockey Association expires after the coming season. Key points include squad regulations and the competitiveness of domestic clubs in the international environment. Concrete discussions should follow after the World Cup.
Now focus on the World Cup
For now, however, the focus is on the national team: numerous ICEHL players will be in action at the World Cup. For Feichtinger it is clear that the focus now is on sporting success on the international stage.
