At 36 years old, former ICEHL goalkeeper Tom McCollum is taking on a new challenge. He moves to France.
In 2008, Tom McCollum was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft. In his career he would also be on the ice for 81 minutes in the best league in the world. The American has been playing in Europe since 2020.
Innsbruck as European “first contact”
After a total of eleven seasons in the American Hockey League, McCollum moved to Europe for the first time at the age of 31. He signed with HC Innsbruck and was supposed to be between the posts there for the next two years. McCollum played the end of the 2021/22 season in the DEL, with the Bietigheim Steelers.
In 2022/23 he was back between the posts for the Tyroleans and was able to win 24 games for the Inntalers. In his three years in the state capital, he celebrated a complete success 61 times. In 2022/23, the Haie even finished the regular season in third place, but in the playoffs it was the “final stop” against the Vienna Capitals.
Austria comeback
After a renewed commitment in Germany with the Eisbären Regensburg (DEL2) and the Belfast Giants (EIHL), McCollum returned to Austria last season. He joined the Adler Kitzbühel. But this collaboration ended after a year. At 36, McCollum still hasn’t had enough and is moving to French second division club Dunkerque.
