Hurricanes outlast Warriors in overtime

A back and forth affair in Lethbridge needed the extra frame to decide a winner. It was a Logan Barlage snipe that eventually gave the Hurricanes a 5-4 overtime win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. Carl Tetachuk records 20 saves in the win.

The Warriors got the party started just 3:03 into the game. Former Hurricane Jadon Joesph created a turnover and buried it past Tetachuk. The goal was Joesph’s sixth of the season with assists awarded to Kade Runke and Daemon Hunt. The lead lasted for just 52 seconds, as Dylan Cozens scooped up a loose puck and fired it past Bailey Brkin. D-Jay Jerome was given the lone assist on Cozens’ eighth of the season.

With all the momentum, the Hurricanes continued to control the game but were unable to cash in and it ended up costing them. The Warriors, on their lone power play of the night, made the hosts pay. Eric Alarie made the game 2-1 on a beautiful shot, with assists on the play credited to Ryder Korczak and Hunt.  The Warriors were not done there either, as just two minutes later it became 3-1 on Owen Hardy’s fifth goal of the season.

The Hurricanes did not go away, though. Finding a way to battle back late in period one, Oliver Okulair slapped in his fifth of the season, pulling the Hurricanes within one heading into the break.

Lethbridge rode the momentum of their late period goal into the middle frame. Good shift after good shift paid off, as just 5:42 into the period, Dino Kambietz slotted home the tying goal. It was his third on the season, and just two minutes later, Noah Boyko’s third goal of the campaign gave the Hurricanes their first lead on the night.

But that lead was short lived. Once again, Joesph hunted his former club, scoring his seventh of the season and second of the game to tie the contest at 4-4. That was the score after 40 minutes.

The third period was all about the goalies — not in terms of the number of saves but in the quality of those saves. Tetachuk stopped all eight shots he faced, including a couple from the slot, while Brkin countered with ten saves, including robbing Cozens at the side of the net in the final minute of play.

So off to overtime.

After the teams exchanged chances, a streaking Logan Barlage received the puck and fired it top shelf past Brkin to give the home team a 5-4 win. The goal was Barlage’s sixth career game winner. Barlage gave credit to his team for the effort that led to the OT winner. “(I) think it was a really good game. We battled and played really good, and then we got the win in the end.”

Coach Brent Kisio echoed Barlage’s comments crediting his team and the effort to battle back and find another way to win. “Yeah, I thought we played better, you know. I thought it was a much better response from our game last night, but I thought tonight we were much better, played the right way, had to go to overtime to win the game. That’s something we got to do it.”

Kisio also praised his goalie who battled hard after a tough start to the game. “You know, you get a couple of tough breaks. It was four goals after 20 shots but two of them are tipped off our sticks. So I thought he responded really well and shut the door.”

Shooting the breeze:

After the Hurricanes were involved in a 17-penalty game last night, there were only two called tonight. Both teams had just the one power play apiece. The Warriors converted their chance while the Hurricanes were unable to take advantage.

Cozens point streak is now at four games, and he has points in nine of the ten games he’s played this season.

Calen Addison had an injury scare late in the second period, as he appeared to hurt his knee in the corner after a collision. He left the game for a few minutes but did return. With Addison’s assist, he is now just two points shy of 175 career points.

Next up for the Hurricanes is a trip to Red Deer on Tuesday for a date with the Rebels, while the Warriors will head home where they will welcome the Calgary Hitmen next Friday.
