Daily Dose of the Dub: Winterhawks sign two ’03s; ICE reassign three; Fix -Wolansky lights up Hurricanes

Winterhawks add O’Brien and Stefan

-On Monday, the Portland Winterhawks announced they had signed 2003-born forwards Jack O’Brien and James Stefan.

O’Brien was a listed forward from Denver, Colorado who now plays for the Little Caesars U15 team. According to the press release, the five-foot-eight, 126 pound O’Brien has 20 points in 20 games with Little Caesars. He also played at USA Hockey’s Select 15 camp for Team Purple and had a goal and two assists.

Stefan also plays for the Little Caesars program and has 28 points in 25 games. He is originally from Laguna, California and is the son of former NHLer Patrik Stefan. His father is a former number one overall NHL-draft pick by the Atlanta Thrashers (1999) and the Czech Republic native played in the NHL for six seasons before finishing his playing days in Switzerland in the 2007-08 season. Patrik is the head coach of the Little Caesars U15 Midget team.

Johnston said in the release that the Little Caesars team is currently ranked number two in the nation.

Portland had previously signed forward Gabe Klassen and goalie Lochlan Gordon from the 2003 class.

Kootenay reassigns three players 

-The Kootenay ICE cut down to 21 roster players by reassigning defenseman Ben Zloty to the Calgary Royals, d-man Anson McMaster to the Okotoks Oilers and forward Owen Pederson to the OHA Edmonton Midget Prep team.

Zloty played in three games over the last weekend and was a minus-two. McMaster was also a minus-two and played three games over two weeks. Pederson was a minus-five over six games dating back to November 1st.

The roster for the ICE now has 12 forwards, seven defensemen and two goalies.

Former Spokane Chief lands new gig

Three stars of the night:

  1. Trey Fix-Wolansky – A goal and two assists for three points led the way in Edmonton’s 6-4 win over Lethbridge. He extended his league lead for points to five with 45 in 22 games.
  2. Brett Kemp – He also had a goal and two assists for three points in the Oil Kings win. He has a five-game point streak going with 11 points in that span.
  3. Zachary Cox – Two goals in the Hurricanes loss. This was the first multi-goal game for the 1999-born forward.
