Winnipeg ICE Select Matthew Savoie first overall in the 2019 Bantam Draft

This morning it became official. The first overall pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam draft and the first ever draft pick in the Winnipeg ICE history became Matthew Savoie.

Matthew Savoie was the consensus best player in the 2019 Bantam Draft class and it wasn’t close. But with his recent exceptional status rejection and his even more recent University of Denver verbal commitment his draft stock was a relative unknown.

A few weeks ago ICE General Manager Matt Cockell made a shrewd move to trade for Carter Savoie, Matthew’s older brother, as it is well known the brothers would like to play together.

If Savoie stays committed to Denver, it is likely he will play with his brother in the AJHL for the Sherwood Park Crusaders.

In a scouting report, DraftGeek explains Savoie’s game

“A generational talent, Savoie is the complete package scouts looks for in a player. Displays a non-stop work ethic shift to shift and has the ability to disrupt or create chances both offensively and defensively. Elite speed, vision, and execution on the power play.”
