This week in Regina Pats history: week 1

This series will be devoted to weekly events in Regina Pats’ history. Interesting games, trades, events, or other worthy notes will be included.

We start with one of the more essential pieces of Pats’ history and will continue from there. It is an excellent place to start the series.

Week one is from December 21 to 27.

December 21

In 1917, the Pats played their first-ever game. The Pats, then known as the Patricias, beat the Regina Victorias by a score of 5-2. Bill Broadfoot, M. A. Wingham, Fred Harding, Frank Broadfoot, and Duke Dutkowski scored for the Pats. Fifteen-year-old Walter Broadfoot picked up the first win in Pats’ history.

December 22

In this Friday night showdown against the Medicine Hat Tigers, the Pats came out on top with a 4-0 win.

Gordon Cowan dazzled in the contest scoring a hat-trick in the opening frame. Pats goalie Bob Tyler was only tested 17 times to pick up the shutout. Harvey Schmidt scored the other goal for the Pats as they collected their 13th win of the season.

December 23

The Pats opened their 1931-32 season with a 3-0 win over the Regina Monarchs. Don Deacon, Lionel Doling, and Moose Stinson scored the Pats’ goals in the win. Pats goaltender Ken Campbell picked up the shutout.

Little did they know, Ken Campbell would go on to not allow a goal during their four-game regular season. He also did not allow a goal until the fifth playoff game. When you add that up Campbell would have eight straight shutouts.

December 24

In their only regular-season game played on Christmas Eve in 1924, the Pats beat the Regina Tigers by a 9-1 score. Leading scorer Sil Acaster scored four straight goals and added a fifth goal in leading the Pats attack. Defenseman Johnny Gottselig and winger Frank Ingram each scored twice to round out the scoring. The Tigers’ lone goal was scored by Malone. With the win, the Pats moved to 2-0 on the season.

December 25

The Pats have played once on Christmas Day. On this day in 1946, the Pats beat the Notre Dame Hounds 6-3 at the Queen City Gardens. Fred Evans and Jimmy Owen each scored a pair of goals in the win. Bill Folk and Jim Fairburn each notched a single marker for the Pats. Del Wilson was the goalie of record for the Pats.

Notre Dame scored first, and the Pats responded with the next six goals to go up 2-1 and 6-1 by periods. The Hounds scored twice in the third to make the score more respectable. Buzz Mellor, Jim Hanson, and Bill Hryciuk responded for the Hounds.

December 26

In the Pats’ last game they played on Boxing Day, they hosted the Moose Jaw Warriors in 1988. 2,853 fans attended the Monday contest. Cory Paterson was moved onto a line with Chad Silver and Gary Dickie and the move paid off. The 18-year-old center scored twice as the Pats beat the Warriors 5-2. Mike Sillinger picked up a pair of goals and Frank Kovacs rounded out the scoring for the Pats. Rod Houk made 24 saves to pick up the win. Rob Harvey and Jeff Rosner replied for Lorne Molleken’s Warriors.

The Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan product made his debut a memorable one scoring twice as the Pats beat the Broncos 7-4. Lloyd Pelletier also picked up a pair of goals. Louis Dumont, Jason Smith, and Jeff Shantz added singles for the Pats. Mike Risdale made 21 saves to pick up the win. Mark Stowe scored twice, and Jason Krywulak and Dan Sherstenka replied for the Broncos.

Going forward

This will not take away from my Twitter “On this date” Tweets. Those will continue. This gives the opportunity to pick a daily event in history and expand on it.

This will be a weekly series that will be published early every week. Keep an eye out for it.
