With the playoffs arriving for many of the leagues that Portland has affiliated players participating, it is a good time to look at how they are doing.
Interestingly enough, when looking at the prospects page on the Portland Winterhawks website, quite a few players who were on the roster, are no longer listed. While that page has been a pretty reliable and an up to date source on Portland’s protected list, I have left some of those players on the list below, until further conformation is made.
Those players are 2000-born forward Easton Easterson and 2000-born defensemen Nick Cicek and Ryan Miley. 1999-born blue liner Darren Gisti has also been removed.
Of note also, is the fact that Portland has 16 NCAA-committed players, which do not count against the 50-man protected list.
Lets start out with the players who are signed and for sure on the list.
Signed prospects:
Evan Fradette (01)- He was impressive at the Neely Cup and during his preseason appearances and has continued that play with ridiculous numbers in the AMHL with St. Albert. His Tire Warehouse Raiders lost in the Division semi-finals to the Leduc Chrysler Oil Kings 3-1 in their best-of-five series.
Jaydon Dureau (01)- Dureau was named SMHL MVP and for good reason. He nearly put up two points a game with 74 in 38. His Regina Pat Canadians closed out the Yorkton Maulers and now are taking on the Prince Albert Mintos in the SMHL semi-finals. They lost in game one to the Mintos 4-3 on Thursday. Game two of the best-of-five series goes Sunday.
Kade Nolan (01)- Nolan’s Notre Dame Hounds just closed out the Saskatoon Blazers in three straight. Nolan had one assist in the sweep and it came during their 8-0 game two thrashing of the Blazers. They now advance to play in the SMHL semi-finals, where they will play the Swift Current Legionnaires. Game one goes tonight.
Nick Perna (01)- Perna and Cross Hanas (02) along with unsigned prospects Jackson Nieuwendyk and Chase Yoder all play for the Dallas Stars Elite U16 team. Hanas is a point-a-game player for the Stars, while Perna helps solidify the back end. They just won the Tier 1 State Championship and now advance to the Rocky Mountain District Championships on March 15th-18th.
Seth Jarvis (02)-His Rink Hockey Academy Midget Prep team is taking part in the CSSHL Championships in Penticton, B.C. He is one of only three 10th graders on the Rink Midget Prep team. Rink is in Pool B in the 12-team tournament. Their first game is March 14th vs the International Hockey Academy.
Dante Giannuzzi (02)- He is is not listed on the Midget Prep CSSHL team, but did play one game for them in net. He does play for Rink Academy’s Elite 15 team and stopped 25 of 27 in their last regular season game. Rink now plays in a eight-team round robin CSSHL Elite 15s tournament in Penticton, where they are in Pool A. Their first game is March 15th vs unsigned Portland prospect Justin Stathpoulos and the Edge School.
