Daily Dose of the Dub: Thunderbirds add Schaufler; Scott and McGovern get shutouts

Seattle brings in another Kootenay blue liner

The Seattle Thunderbirds made another trade with the Kootenay ICE on Monday, bringing in 2000-born, right-handed defenseman Loeden Schaufler, a ninth-round pick in the 2019 Bantam Draft and conditional future picks for the rights to 2001-born forward Eric Fawkes.

Schaufler has played in one game so far this year for Kootenay. He had six assists in 32 games last year.

Fawkes was a second-round pick in 2016 by Seattle but has yet to sign with the team. He had 74 points last year in 47 games for the Winnipeg Wild Midget AAA team.

The Thunderbirds are in need of a defenseman as Jarret Tyszka is still out with an injury he suffered while at Montreal Canadiens camp and Cade McNelly still needs to serve one more game of his three-game suspension he got for a one-man fight against Portland. Reece Harsch also took a high hit from Sean Richards on Friday night and had to be helped off the ice, so they could be without him as well. The addition of Schaufler gives them six defensemen to play against Kelowna on Wednesday.

Seattle also acquired d-man Payton McIsaac from Kootenay earlier this year.

Schaufler will wear number 32 for Seattle.

Three stars of the day:

  1. Duncan McGovern – He stopped all 45 shots from the Medicine Hat Tigers and earned his third career shutout as his Kootenay ICE dropped the Tigers 5-0.
  2. Brett Leason – A goal and two assists as his Prince Albert Raiders drubbed the Calgary Hitmen in Calgary 4-0. Leason, who leads the WHL in shots on goal with 54 through nine games, now has 17 points – tied for the most in the league.
  3. Ian Scott – Turned away all 23 shots from the Hitmen to bring home his fourth career shutout. His GAA is now 1.63 and his save percentage is 0.941.

Troubling moments:

Jermaine Loewen was given a four-game suspension for his hit on Matt Quigley last Friday. Quigley is not expected to play for quite some time.

-Later in that same game, Jake Leschyshyn was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for spearing Johnny Hooker. He was assessed a one-game suspension.
