-I only included those eligible to return to their WHL teams. It should be noted that every 1998-born and signed players is more than likely going to play professionally in 2018-19.

Matteo Gennaro signed by Arizona

One of those 1997-born players not included on the list above has not only been invited to camp, he has been signed to an AHL contract with the Tucson Roadrunners. They are the affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes. It looks like the Swift Current Broncos’ teammate of Tyler Steenbergen will be playing alongside him in 2018-19.

Gennaro had 18 points in 26 playoff goals after potting 79 points in the regular season between the Calgary Hitmen and Swift Current.

Steve Konowalchuk fired by Anaheim

It appears that the former head coach of the Seattle Thunderbirds is without a job. After winning the Ed Chynoweth Cup in 2016-17, Konowalchuk took an assistant coaching job with the Anaheim Ducks where he was tasked with running the power plat.

After a poor performance from that unit, Konowalchuk was tossed out. Could he end up back in the WHL?

Konowalchuk was an assistant in Colorado in 2009-10 and 2010-11 before coming back to take the helm for the rival of his former WHL team, the Portland Winter Hawks.

After one tough season in 2011-12, Konowalchuk got Seattle back in the playoffs. The 2013-14 T-birds advanced to the second round before bowing out. In 2015-16 Seattle made their first run to the WHL final since 1997. The next year behind Mathew Barzal and co. they won the first WHL title in franchise history.

Matt O’Dette now is the head coach in Seattle after being Konowalchuk’s assistant for many years.
