The 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft was held at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. With the first overall pick, the New York Islanders selected forward John Tavares.
At DUBNetwork, we’ll supply one of these features from now until Christmas Day, culminating with the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
Here’s a look at the Western Hockey League players chosen in the first round, along with a few statistics.

The 2009 draft class was star-studded, particularly from eastern Canada. However, the WHL supplied some significant talent as well, including four of the first ten picks.
Evander Kane was the first WHL player selected.
At the time, it appeared to be an interesting opportunity for the British Columbia native to develop and represent in a vibrant southern market in the United States. Kane played two seasons in Atlanta before his 20th birthday, then landed with the franchise in Winnipeg for the 2011-12 season. A controversial figure, Kane is now a member of the San Jose Sharks.
Brayden Schenn parlayed a successful WHL stint into a productive NHL career that now includes a Stanley Cup championship.
Schenn bounced around the NHL until he landed in St. Louis, where the Blues turned an outstanding second-half run during the 2018-19 season into a championship campaign.
Defenceman Jared Cowan had his career derailed to some degree by injuries, while Scott Glennie and Carter Ashton were unable to sustain NHL careers.
Of note at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, we include an Ontario Hockey League grad, Ryan O’Reilly, simply to demonstrate how a player not chosen in the first round can become an absolute star in the NHL.
Indeed, every team in the league whiffed on O’Reilly back in 2009. O’Reilly was a prominent contributor on the St. Louis Blues championship team last season.
And just think – Colorado selected both O’Reilly and defenceman Tyson Barrie with second and third round selections. Suffice to say, Joe Sakic and his group had a pretty good day at the draft table.
A sixth-round selection, 161st overall, and a late bloomer is goaltender Darcy Kuemper.
His patience and persistence has paid off as the 29-year-old Saskatoon native is currently in his second season as the Arizona Coyotes’ number one goalie.
