Daily Dose of the Dub: Seven WHL’ers make Team Canada camp; Moose Jaw makes pair of trades; Patterson off to Everett

Team Canada selection camp to feature seven WHL players

Hockey Canada released their 34-man selection camp roster for the World Juniors on Monday morning, and seven of the players are currently playing in the WHL.

Prince Albert netminder Ian Scott is one of three goalies attending camp, and his eye-popping 22-1-0 record, .943 save percentage and 1.61 GAA should challenge Michael DiPietro for starting duties.

Three defensemen will be attending: Spokane’s Ty Smith, Moose Jaw’s Josh brook and Lethbridge’s Calen Addison. Smith figures to log plenty of time for Canada in the tournament.

Rounding out the group are forwards Cody Glass (Portland), Brett Leason (Prince Albert) and Jaret Anderson-Dolan (Spokane), the latter of which is still recovering from a wrist injury and is considered questionable to be ready for the start of the tournament.

The entire 34-man roster can be seen here.

Czech Republic, Finland also release rosters

Four WHL’ers were named to the Czech Republic selection camp and one WHL’er will attend Finland’s camp. Brandon goalie Jiri Patera, Spokane d-man Filip Kral, Kelowna d-man Libor Zabransky and Tri-City forward Krystof Hrabik will compete for Czech Republic, while Kelowna d-man Lassi Thomson will appear for Finland. Also attending Finland’s camp is Aleksi Heponiemi, who ranked third in WHL scoring last season with 118 points while on the league-champion Swift Current Broncos. His 2.07 points per game led the league among eligible players.

Warriors make pair of acquisitions

The Moose Jaw Warriors acquired a pair of depth wingers on Monday, adding 1999-born Luke Ormsby from Everett and 2001-born Kjell Kjemhus from Prince George. They sent out a sixth-round pick and seventh-round pick, respectively.

Ormsby who is from Monroe, WA was originally a ninth-round draft pick by the Seatttle Thunderbirds. He had six points this season with Everett in 25 games.

Kjemhus, from Grande Prairie, AB. was a fourth-round pick by the Regina Pats in 2016 before being traded to Prince George at the 2017-18 trade deadline. He had two assists in five games with P.G. this season and played 10 games in the BCHL with the Vernon Vipers.

Silvertips acquire Patterson from Broncos

Swift Current continued their rebuild on Monday, shipping 1999-born winger Max Patterson west to Everett in exchange for a fourth-round pick and listed prospect Dawson Springer. Patterson has accumulated 19 points over the first 27 games of the season. This led the team in scoring before his departure.

Patterson, was originally picked by the Kootenay Ice in the fourth-round of the 2014 draft and was dealt to Swift Current early last season for goalie Bailey Brkin (later moved to Spokane) and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2018 draft.

Springer has 25 points in 21 games with the Prince Albert Mintos of the SMHL and has yet to sign a WHL standard player agreement.

Protas and Sapego will play for WJD1 Championship

The Raiders will be without two key contributors soon as both defenseman Sergei Sapego and forward Aliaksei Protas are off to represent their home country of Belarus at the U20 World Junior Division 1 Championship in Fussen, Germany.

They will play in Group A at the tournament and starting Sunday, December ninth, will try to earn a spot for Belarus in next year’s U20 World Junior Championship.

This tournament will go until Saturday, December 15th.
