Warriors acquire Tetachuk from Hurricanes

In the same week, as the Moose Jaw Warriors unloaded the rights to one goaltender, they have now added the rights to another.

The Warriors have acquired Carl Tetachuk from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a conditional 7th-round pick in 2024, the club announced Thursday.

Tetachuk, a 2001 birth year, shouldered the load in net for a rebuilding Lethbridge club this past Covid-shortened campaign, earning a record of 5-7-3, and a save percentage of .878 over 17 appearances.

As with many young men, it is difficult to paint a picture of the real Tetachuk under the circumstances of that crazy season. This may especially be true given that the now 20-year-old Lethbridge native proved himself a more-than-capable Western Hockey League starter over the two previous seasons, where he won over 20 games and had goals-against averages under 3.00 each time as the starter for his hometown club.

The Warriors dealt the Canadian Hockey League playing rights to Swedish import Jesper Wallstedt earlier this week, thus opening the door for general manager Jason Ripplinger to add a veteran puck-stopper to likely work alongside promising 2003 birth-year Brett Mirwald for a championship run in 2021-2022.

Whether Tetatchuk is clearly the answer to help bring a protracted championship run to the ‘Friendly City’ will have to be seen, but for the Warriors to go out and get an established 20-year-old to play in the net is a firm statement to the fanbase that they plan to really go for it right away; and with a core that showed a ton of promise at the Regina Hub built around Ryder Korczak, Brayden Yager, and Jagger Firkus upfront, and Daemon Hunt and Denton Mateychuk on the back end, they are confident now is the time.

That they only had to give up a conditional 7th for the established veteran Tetachuk likely means the Hurricanes were looking to the future in their big youngsters Bryan Thomson and Jaryd Picklyk, who both got extended looks over the last season as well.
