ICE to upgrade Wayne Fleming Arena for 2019-20 season

The Winnipeg ICE announced upgrades to the Wayne Fleming Arena on Thursday which will include “Premium Loge seating, a Premium Party Lounge, in-seat service, a video scoreboard, and concession upgrades.” The ICE say seating capacity will be increased from the current 1400 to 1600. The Wayne Fleming Arena will play host to the ICE for the 2019-20, and 20220-21 seasons before the ICE move into their new arena for the 2021-22 season.

The ICE also announced their season ticket prices for the 2019-20 season on Thursday with prices ranging from $45.75 per month to $79 a month for Premium Loge Seating. Fans who have already placed their deposit will be able to select their seat on Friday morning.

Rosters named for U-16 Summer Camps

BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba have named their rosters for their upcoming U-16 Summer Camps.

Team BC’s roster features 68 players and includes WHL prospects like Mats Lindgren (Kamloops Blazers), Brandon Lisowsky (Saskatoon Blades), Grayden Siepmann (Calgary Hitmen), Mathew Ward (Swift Current Broncos), Ben Thornton (Spokane Chiefs), Layton Feist (Regina Pats), Caleb Reimer (Edmonton Oil Kings), Jason Spizawka (Victoria Royals), Connor Levis (Kamloops Blazers), Tyson Jugnauth (Swift Current Broncos) and Niall Crocker (Prince Albert Raiders).

Hockey Alberta will have WHL prospects like Matthew Savoie (Winnipeg ICE), Keaton Dowhaniuk (Prince George Cougars), Koehn Ziemmer (Prince George Cougars), Nate Danielson (Brandon Wheat Kings), Jordan Gustafson (Seattle Thunderbirds), Oasiz Wiesblatt (Medicine Hat Tigers), Rylen Roersma (Brandon Wheat Kings) attending their camp.

Saskatchewan roster will have one lone first-round pick from this year’s WHL Bantam Draft in Kevin Korchinski, who was selected by the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Hockey Manitoba is holding a camp right now to slim down the roster from 40 athletes to 20-23 athletes for a camp in August. WHL prospects attending the current camp include Conor Geekie (Winnipeg ICE), Tyson Zimmer (Brandon Wheat Kings) and Danton Mateychuk (Moose Jaw Warriors).

What Happened to Corey Graham?

Edmonton Oil Kings fans have been wondering what happened to their play-by-play broadcaster Corey Graham after he left the team following the 2018 WHL season. Courtesy of TSN1260 host and Oilersnation.com writer Jason Gregor, fans of Graham’s work got an answer. In June 2018, doctors discovered a large tumour growing on Graham’s spine. Graham has since undergone two surgeries in an effort to remove the tumour. Graham has now been left unable to walk but is in rehab with hopes to regain that ability. As for his play-by-play career, Graham told Gregor he plans to return to the broadcast booth once he is fully healthy. On behalf of everyone here at DubNetwork, we’d like to send our best wishes to Corey for a full recovery and we can’t wait to see him back calling play-by-play in the WHL.

Burkholder wins 2019 Youth Hockey Hub Bantam Player of the Year

Portland Winterhawks prospect Max Burkholder has been named the Youth Hockey Hub Bantam Player of the Year. Burkholder was selected in the 10th round of the WHL Bantam Draft by Portland but is verbally committed to Colorado College of the NCAA.

Savoie wins CJHL Rookie of the Year

Winnipeg ICE prospect Carter Savoie has been named the CJHL rookie of the year. Savoie, 17, spent this season with the Sherwood Park Crusaders of the AJHL where he had 31 goals and 42 assists in 58 games. The ICE acquired Savoie from the Regina Pats earlier this spring in an attempt to unite him with his brother Matthew in an ICE uniform. Both are committed to the University of Denver.

Red Wings re-sign McIlrath 

The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed defenseman Dylan McIlrath to a two-year contract extension. McIlrath played 232 games in the WHL for the Moose Jaw Warriors and had 16 goals and 58 assists. He was selected in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers.

Skinner records first pro playoff win

We missed it last night but with the Bakersfield Condors thrilling overtime win over the San Diego Gulls, WHL alumnus Stuart Skinner (207 GP with the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Swift Current Broncos) recorded his first pro playoff win.

WHL alumni to represent countries at IIHF World Championship

Three alumni of the Kamloops Blazers will be representing their countries at the 2019 IIHF World Championship. Rudolfs Balcers (66 GP, 40 G, 37 A) will represent Latvia, Michael Fora (60 GP, 6 G, 26 A) will represent Switzerland and Tim Bozon (260 GP, 140 G, 154 A with the Kamloops Blazers and Kootenay ICE) will represent France.

We’ve already mentioned that Damon Severson (260 GP, 36 G, 131 A with Kelowna) will be representing Canada but on Thursday it was announced that Leon Draisaitl (160 GP, 78 G, 138 A with the Prince Albert Raiders and Kelowna Rockets) will be representing Germany and Jackson Whistle (141 GP with the Vancouver Giants and Kelowna Rockets) will be representing Great Britain.

Clark to be inducted into Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame

Saskatoon Blades alumni Wendel Clark will be inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame in September along with five other athletes and two builders. In 136 games with the Blades, Clark and 55 goals and 100 assists.
