Daily Dose of the Dub: Williams extended, Kemp suspended and more

Williams given a contract extension by Silvertips:

-In his third season with the Everett Silvertips, head coach Dennis Williams has been extended by the team for three more seasons after this one. That means the team has guaranteed his contract through the 2022023 season. Prior to joining the Silvertips, Williams spent three seasons with the Bloomington Thunder of the USHL.

Williams won a silver medal this past summer at the U18 Hlinka Memorial with Hockey Canada and had back-to-back 47 win seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Kemp suspended:

-Medicine Hat Tigers forward Brett Kemp was suspended for one game after having a one man fight in the last five minutes of his team’s 7-0 win over Regina on Tuesday. He will miss their game Saturday in Edmonton against the Oil Kings.

Jugnauth commits to West Kelowna:

-2019 Swift Current Broncos first round pick, defenseman Tyson Jugnauth has committed to play for the West Kelowna Warriors of the BCHL. This commitment means him playing as a 16-year-old with the Broncos seems less likely. Jugnauth was taken 21st overall and is playing for the Okanagan Rockets of the BCMML this season.

Winterhawks, Oil Kings, Silvertips and Hurricanes in top 10 of CHL:

Lajoie with Hockey Alberta:

Serge Lajoie, who coached the Kamloops Blazers last season, has been named Hockey Alberta’s U16 team for the WHL Cup. Lajoie is also the father of 2003-born Tri-City Americans defenseman Marc Lajoie.

Lineup notes:

-2003-born defenseman Charlie Wright returned to the lineup tonight. He last played on January 8th.

-Winnipeg overage forward Isaac Johnson was able to play tonight despite being listed on the weekly report as day-to-day.

-Tri-City Americans defenseman Bryan McAndrews was back in the lineup despite being listed as day-to-day in the weekly report.

-Kelowna overage forward Matthew Wedman and defenseman Devin Steffler both returned to the lineup. Wedman last played on January 31st while Steffler had been out since January 19th.

-Rookie forward Eric Alarie and overage defenseman Carson Sass came back for Moose Jaw. Sass last played on January 11th.

Three stars of the night:

  1. Mark Kastelic (Calgary) – 4 goals and an assist for the overage forward. He paved the way for a huge 8-1 Calgary win over the Regina Pats.
  2. Matthew Wedman (Kelowna) – Talk about a return to the lineup. He had a hat trick as his Rockets flew past the Tri-City Americans 8-3.
  3. Pavel Novak (Kelowna) – One goal and four assists for the WHL’s other five point night.

Honorable mentions:

Kyle Olson (Calgary) had two goals and two assists for four points… Kyle Topping (Kelowna) had a goal and three assists for four points… Peyton Krebs (Winnipeg) and Dawson Barteaux (Winnipeg) each had three assist nights in the ICE’s 8-3 victory in Swift Current… Ridly Greig (Brandon) and Conner Gutenberg (Brandon) each put up four points in the Wheat Kings 5-1 win over Saskatoon… Trent Miner (Vancouver) turned away 23-of-24 in the Giants 4-1 victory over Red Deer… Brock Gould (Moose Jaw) stopped 57-of-59 as the Warriors grabbed one point in their 2-1 OT loss in Spokane.

Troubling moment:

-Olson had four points but also instigated a fight with under five minutes left. He was handed a game misconduct for his actions and may hear from the league.
