Wheat Kings acquire Schmiemann from Americans

The Brandon Wheat Kings have acquired 1999-born defenseman Dominic Schmiemann from the Tri-City Americans for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft and a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2022 WHL Bantam Draft. Originally a first-round pick of the Swift Current Broncos, Schmiemann has also spent time with the Calgary Hitmen during his WHL career. In 207 WHL games, he’s potted seven goals with 39 assists and 268 penalty minutes. The Wheat Kings now have until Thursday to move out one of their 1999-borns as they already have captain Connor Gutenberg, goaltender Jiri Patera, and defenseman Zach Wytinck on their roster. On the other side of the deal, the Americans are now down to the CHL overage limit with Krystof Hrabik, Kyle Olson and Beck Warm.

44 WHL Players named to NHL Central Scouting “Players to Watch List”

NHL Central Scouting has released its preliminary rankings for the 2020 NHL Entry Draft in Montreal. Led by Prince Albert Raiders defenseman Kaiden Guhle, Moose Jaw Warriors defenseman Daemon Hunt, Brandon Wheat Kings defenseman Braden Schneider and Vancouver Giants forward Justin Sourdif as ‘A’ caliber talent, a total of 44 WHL players made the list. 21 of 22 WHL clubs are represented on the list with the Portland Winterhawks leading the way with five “Players to Watch”.

Smith named WHL Player of the Week

After Dylan Cozens took home WHL Player of the Week honours last week as he came back from Buffalo Sabres training camp, we have another player making an immediate impact on his return from the NHL to recognize this week. Ty Smith has been named WHL Player of the Week after returning from the New Jersey Devils. The defenseman recorded three goals and three assists in three games to put his Spokane Chiefs Chiefs atop the WHL’s U.S. division.

Anders takes home WHL Goaltender of the Week honours 

The Red Deer Rebels haven’t lost a game since September 28th and it’s in large part due to the play of netminder Ethan Anders who posted a perfect 3-0-0 record, with a 1.66 GAA and .952 save percentage in games against the Saskatoon Blades, Swift Current Broncos and Medicine Hat Tigers. Undrafted in the WHL Bantam Draft, Anders is currently tied for the league lead in wins.

Americans release Dunsford from the active roster 

The Tri-City Americans have released goaltender Mason Dunsford from the active roster. The New Westminster, BC native saw action in four preseason games with a 3.41 GAA and .899 Save Percentage but did not suit up in the regular season. He’s expected to report the Port Moody Panthers of the PJHL.

Cougars unveil “Oktoberfest” jerseys 

The Prince George Cougars have unveiled the jersey that the team will wear when they hold their “Oktoberfest Night” on October 19th when the Spokane Chiefs visit the CN Centre. If you’d like to get your hands on one of these jerseys, they will be available in an online auction which starts on October 9th. The jerseys were designed by Full Stride Designs which is run and operated by former WHL player Taylor Vause who played with the Swift Current Broncos from 2007-08 until 2011-12.

Voracek released from one-month tryout 

Tomas Voracek (67 GP, 4 G, 10 A with the Prince Albert Raiders) has concluded his one-month try-out with Hradec Králove in the Czech Republic. He only got into one game and was held off the scoresheet.

BCHL headed to Cranbrook? 

Our friend Brian Wiebe over at BCHLNetwork reports the BCHL is getting set to announce the Cranbrook Bucks will be joining the league for the 2020-21 season. Cranbrook has been without a hockey team to fill Western Financial Place since the WHL’s Kootenay ICE relocated to Winnipeg for this season.
