Daily Dose of the Dub: Trade deadline gets a head start; trio of former WHLers named AHL All-Stars; Legien back to the SJHL

One week before the WHL trade deadline, multiple teams got a head start on the action with four trades being made Thursday.

ICE acquire Creta

The Kootenay ICE have acquired ‘00 defenceman Marco Creta from Regina for ‘01 forward Blake Allan in what would be the first of three trades the Pats made on the day.

Creta is a Manitoba native, is joining an organization that is only second to the Wheat Kings for players born in Manitoba within their system. He has nine points in 33 games this year with Kootenay and has 14 points in 66 career WHL games.

Allan is a former third round pick of the ICE and has put up three assists in 31 games this season and will surely be looking to benefit from a fresh start.

Mahovlich to the ‘Canes

The Regina Pats and Lethbridge Hurricanes made their second deal together in just over a month with the Hurricanes acquiring ‘99 forward Scott Mahovlich and an eighth round pick in 2019 from the Pats for a 2019 third round pick.

Mahovlich has appeared in 38 games this season with Regina, collecting five goals and four assists for nine points to go along with 24 penalty minutes. He has played in 130 WHL games with Kamloops and Regina putting up 18 points.

Feist to the Pats

In Regina’s third and final deal of the day, they acquired ‘01 defenceman Tyson Feist and a tenth round pick in 2019 from Spokane for a fifth round pick in 2021 and an eighth round pick in 2019. According to Chiefs GM Scott Carter, Feist waived his no trade clause with him seeking more ice time.

Feist, who was originally signed as a list player, has five assists in 25 games this year with Spokane.

Royals and Raiders swap 20 year olds

Victoria and Prince Albert completed the biggest deal of the day, exchanging overage forwards with the Raiders acquiring forward Dante Hannoun along with a fourth and eighth round pick in 2019 in exchange for forward Kody McDonald, ‘00 forward Carson Miller and a 2020 third round pick.

Miller is a former first round pick (21st overall in 2015) who has played in 38 games this season and has recorded 18 points and has 47 points in 156 games.

McDonald has 18 points in 30 games this year with Prince Albert. In 295 WHL games, the 20-year-old has 174 points and a whopping 501 penalty minutes and will be back in the B.C. Division after being traded to Prince Albert from Prince George early last season.

Hannoun has played all of his 286 WHL games in Victoria recording 248 points which puts him fourth all time in the franchise. At the time of his departure, he leads the team in points with 36 in 28 games this season. Hannoun adds experience in the league and a boost up front for an already stacked Raiders club who has been the best team in the country all season.

Three ex WHLers at AHL All Star Game

The 2019 AHL All Star game will have a bit of a WHL flavour to it this year with three alumni being selected to participate. Curtis Lazar (Edmonton), John Quenneville (Brandon), and Connor Ingram (Kamloops) will represent their respective divisions for the festivities.

Lazar has been playing for the Flames’ affiliate, the Stockton Heat where he is second on the team in points with 22 points in 28 games. The former Oil King is a two time WHL champion and Memorial Cup champion in 2014 and this will be his first AHL All Star game.

Ingram is a Tampa Bay Lightning prospect playing in his second pro season for the Syracuse Crunch where he’s appeared in 14 games with a 2.44 GAA and a .920 SV%. The former Blazer standout played in 158 games for Kamloops with a record of 81-50-16, 2.68 GAA and a 918 SV%. This is his first All Star selection.

Quenneville will be participating in his second AHL All Star game in his three pro seasons, earning 19 points in 19 AHL games this season. The New Jersey first rounder won a WHL championship in 2016 with the Brandon Wheat Kings  and had 197 points in 222 career WHL games.

Legien back to SJHL

After just three games, the Vancouver Giants have released 20-year-old Jared Legien and he has returned to Yorkton of the SJHL. Legien recorded a goal and two assists in his first game with the Giants in a 6-0 win over Red Deer then was pointless in the next two games. It seems as though the Giants have their eye on acquiring another overage player as they only have two on their roster with Matt Barberis out with injury for what sounds like will be a lengthy amount of time.

Kindopp gets a letter

‘99 forward Bryce Kindopp has been named an assistant captain of the Everett Silvertips, he has played 174 games in a Silvertips jersey and has 37 points in 38 games this season. He joins Sahvan Khaira, Jake Christiansen, Wyatte Wylie and Riley Sutter as assistant captains and captain Connor Dewar.
