Thunderbirds sign 2020 third-round selection

It was announced on Monday afternoon that the Seattle Thunderbirds signed the 63rd overall pick from the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft, Sawyer Mynio. The product of Kamloops, BC, was the Thunderbirds’ fourth pick of the day and comes to the team from Yale Hockey Academy Bantam Prep. Last season with the team the defenseman scored four goals and added 19 assists in 23 games. He is also the fourth Thunderbird to sign from the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft class.

The main features in BC’s move to Phase 3 Return to Sport include cohort groups of up to 50 or four teams, competitive play between cohorts, but also suggests rules should be modified to limit or minimize physical contact.

Calvin Thurkauf (121GP, 51G, 64A with Kelowna) has signed his first overseas contract, with EV Zug of the NLA, Switzerland’s top professional league. The Zug, Switzerland native has played three seasons professionally in North America, including three games with the NHL team that drafted him, the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was a seventh-round pick of Columbus in 2016. Last year he played 53 games with the Cleveland Monsters, scoring nine goals and adding 17 assists. He also played in those three games with the Blue Jackets.

Joseph signs try-out with Bodens HF

Following a season in which he played for three WHL teams, Jadon Joseph (253GP, 46G, 87A with Lethbridge, Regina, Vancouver, Moose Jaw, Kelowna, and Tri-City) has signed a try-out contract with Bodens HF of Division 1 in Sweden, the second-tier professional league in that country. Last season with the Warriors, Rockets, and Americans, Joseph scored 12 goals and added 21 assists in 64 games. It is his first season of professional hockey.

Skvrne signs with SHK Hodonin

Marek Skvrne (69GP, 4G, 9A with Kelowna) has signed with Czech3 league team SHK Hodonin. Last season Skvrne split between BK Nova Paka and HC Trutnov of the Czech3 league and HC Hronov of the Czech4 league. He had eight goals and eight assists in the Czech3 league over 31 games and four goals and three assists in the Czech4 league in four games.

Travis Ewanyk (185GP, 26G, 33A with Edmonton) has been taken off the roster of the Krefeld Pinquine of the DEL. Last season was the centre’s second with the team, he scored once and added five assists in 44 contests. Ewanyk has also played five seasons professionally in North America. The St. Albert, AB native now becomes a free agent in pursuit of his next professional hockey contract.
