WHL at CWG

Day 3:  Saskatchewan (2-1-0-0) blows past Manitoba (1-2-0-0) 7-1, Alberta (2-1-0-0) squeezed past BC by a score of 5-4, Yukon lost to Newfoundland & Labrador 7-0 and Northwest Territories (2-2-0-0) defeated Nunavut 6-0.

  • Portland Winterhawks prospect Gabe Klassen had a goal and two assists.
  •  Prince Albert Raiders prospect Logan Linklater had two goals.
  •  Prince Albert Raiders prospect Nolan Allan had a goal and an assist.

WHL hands out weekly awards

Brandon Wheat Kings captain Stelio Mattheos was named WHL Player of the Week after putting up nine points (4G, 5A) and a +7 rating in three games, with the Wheat Kings going 3-0-0-0. The former first overall pick in the bantam draft has 84 points (37G, 47A) in 53 games this season.

Portland Winterhawks goaltender Joel Hofer was named WHL Goaltender of the Week with a 2-0-0-0 record, a 1.00 GAA, a .967 save percentage with one shutout. The St. Louis Blues prospect has 7-4-0-0 record with a 2.76 GAA, a .920 save percentage and two shutouts since being acquired from Swift Current at last month’s trade deadline.

Blichfeld first to 50G/100pts

Portland Winterhawks forward Joachim Blichfeld became the first player in the WHL to score 50 goals and 100 points with a natural hat trick and an assist in a 5-3 win over Vancouver. The San Jose prospect is up to 102 points (51G, 51A) in 58 games this season and has a 14-point lead in the scoring race.

Multiple Milestones

Kelowna Rockets defenceman Schael Higson skated in his 300th WHL game against Victoria on Monday. The Grande Prairie native has spent time with Saskatoon, Brandon and Kelowna collecting 82 points (19G, 63A) in his WHL career.

Everett Silvertips defenceman Wyatte Wylie appeared in his 200th career game against Prince George in a 4-1 win. The hometown kid has spent his whole WHL career with the Silvertips, putting up 80 points (14G, 66A) in the 200 games.

Lethbridge Hurricanes captain Jordy Bellerive recorded his 250th point with an assist in a 5-2 win over Kootenay. The Pittsburgh Penguins prospect has 67 points (25G, 42A) in 57 games this season and in four seasons with the Hurricanes he has 251 points (109G, 142A) in 263 games.

Edmonton Oil Kings goaltender Dylan Myskiw recorded his first WHL shutout in a 38 save performance to lead the Oil Kings to a 5-0 win over Medicine Hat. In 77 career games split with Victoria, Brandon and Edmonton, he has a record of 35-21-0-6 with a 3.03 GAA and a .898 save percentage to go with the shutout.

Khaira suspended

Everett Silvertips defenceman Sahvan Khaira was handed a one-game suspension, which was served on Monday, for his actions against Seattle on February 16th. This is Khaira’s third suspension of his WHL career and he also skated in his 300th WHL game in Friday’s win over Kelowna.

 

Three Stars of the Night

1st Star: Portland’s Joachim Blichfeld had a hat trick and an assist in a 5-3 win over Vancouver.

2nd Star: Edmonton’s Dylan Myskiw stopped all 38 shots he faced in a 5-0 win over Medicine Hat.

3rd Star: Prince Albert’s Noah Gregor had two goals and two assists in a 4-3 win over Moose Jaw.
