Daily Dose of the Dub: Russia wins Hlinka Gretzky Cup, Canada finishes second, Sweden gets bronze

Canada gets silver for the first time since 1995 

For the first time since 1995, Canada did not take home the gold medal in summer U18 tournament action falling to Russia 3-2 on Saturday. Winnipeg ICE forward Connor McClennon was the lone WHL player to hit the scoresheet in the gold medal game, assisting on Canada’s first goal. Kamloops Blazers netminder Dylan Garand was in net for Canada making 10 saves on just 13 shots in 58 minutes of action before being pulled for the extra attacker.

Sweden takes home bronze at Hlinka Gretzky Cup

Moose Jaw Warriors import draft pick Jesper Wallstedt didn’t get the call between the pipes for the bronze medal game on Saturday, but that didn’t stop Sweden from picking up the win against rival Finland. Swift Current Broncos import draft pick Kasper Puutio had an assist on Finland’s lone goal.

WHL Stat Leaders at Hlinka Gretzky Cup 

Vancouver Giants forward Justin Sourdif (Canada) led the WHL contingent at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup with five points in the tournament. Fellow Canadian and Portland Winterhawks forward Seth Jarvis tied for second with Everett Silvertips import draft pick Michal Gut (Czech Republic) with four points each. Rounding out the top six, Portland Winterhawks forward Cross Hanas (United States of America), Kelowna Rockets import draft pick Pavel Novak (Czech Republic) and Brandon Wheat Kings forward Ridly Greig (Canada) each finished with three points.

In between the pipes, Moose Jaw Warriors import pick Jesper Wallstedt (Sweden) had a 2.47 GAA and .936 save percentage while Kamloops Blazers goalie Dylan Garand (Canada) had a 1.50 GAA and .857 save percentage.

Tomanek signs in German third league 

Roman Tomanek (73 GP, 19 G, 29 A with the Calgary Hitmen and Seattle Thunderbirds) has signed in the German third league with the Rostock Piranhas. Last season in Romania, Tomanek put up 22 goals and 28 assists in 50 games.
