Daily Dose of the Dub: Royals acquire Herauf, Teams starting to get close to opening night rosters and some injury updates

Royals acquire Herauf from Rebels 

The Victoria Royals have acquired defenseman Jacob Herauf from the Red Deer Rebels in exchange for a 2020 second-round pick, a 2021 sixth-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2022 WHL Bantam Draft. Herauf is going into his fourth season in the WHL after being drafted by the Rebels in the first round of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. In 173 games, all with Red Deer, Herauf has three goals and 36 assists with 103 penalty minutes.

Rebels also release Ward from active roster 

The Red Deer Rebels have also released goaltender Eric Ward from the active roster. The 2001-born netminder was acquired by the Rebels from the Seattle Thunderbirds in December for a seventh-round pick in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. He has yet to suit up in a WHL game and will be reporting to the AJHL’s Drayton Valley Thunder.

Thunderbirds release Thompson

The Seattle Thunderbirds have released forward Baron Thompson, leaving the team with four overage players heading into the regular season. In 172 WHL games with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Thompson has 24 goals and 26 assists. Thompson will now report to the MJHL’s Dauphin Kings who hold his CJHL rights.

Rockets release Tisdale from the active roster 

Cole Tisdale will be reporting to the AJHL’s Camrose Kodiaks after being released from the active roster by the Kelowna Rockets. The 2002-born goalie was selected by the Rockets in the seventh round of the 2017 WHL Bantam Draft.

Paulhus headed to SJHL’s Broncos 

Josh Paulhus will join the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos after being released from the active roster by the Regina Pats. A former 10th round pick of the Seattle Thunderbirds, the Pats listed Paulhus during the 2018-19 season before signing with the club late last month.

Malm back with Hitmen due to injury 

The NHL’s Calgary Flames have returned James Malm to the Calgary Hitmen as he rehabs a lower-body injury sustained during Hitmen Training Camp. The Hitmen consider his status “week-to-week” at this point which would put his health up in the air for the Hitmen season opener.

Vitelli leaves preseason game with an injury 

Everett Silvertips forward Reece Vitelli left the game against the Seattle Thunderbirds with an apparent injury in the second period. There’s no word on the severity of the injury but he did not return for the third period. The situation will be one to watch for an already-depleted Silvertips lineup.

Fairbrother injured at Canadiens rookie camp 

Everett Silvertips defenseman Gianni Fairbrother was held out of a game between the Montreal Canadiens rookies and Quebec University All-Stars. There was no specific update on his injury, but it isn’t serious enough to keep him out of Canadiens’ training camp as he was one of 57 players listed on the training camp roster

Plouffe attending Canadiens training camp on amateur-try out 

While we’re talking about the Canadiens’ training camp, Vancouver Giants defenseman Dylan Plouffe is one of five players attending camp on an amateur try-out contract.

Dach injures shoulder at Blackhawks rookie camp 

Saskatoon Blades forward Kirby Dach injured his shoulder in the final game of the Traverse City Prospect tournament between the Chicago Blackhawks prospects and Minnesota Wild prospects. The good news for Blades and Blackhawks fans alike is that Dach was only held out of the game for precautionary reasons and should join the Blackhawks when training camp opens on Friday.

Spokane adds ex-Chief to the coaching staff

The Spokane Chiefs have added Chiefs’ alumnus Dustin Donaghy (176 GP, 15 G, 23 A with the Spokane Chiefs and Lethbridge Hurricanes) as a part-time assistant coach. His coaching resume includes two seasons (2016-18) with the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers as an assistant coach. When not coaching with the Chiefs, Donaghy will be pursuing a career in firefighting in the Spokane area.

New Royals get jersey numbers 

As reported by our Ryan Sinclair, recently acquired Royals Graeme Bryks and Jacob Herauf have received their jersey numbers. Bryks will be wearing #11 while Herauf will be donning #2.

Stevenson attending Canucks training camp 

Dyson Stevenson (252 GP, 75 GP, 93 A with the Regina Pats) is attending training camp with the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks. He spent the majority of last season with the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder, recording 11 goals and 18 assists in 39 games, but he also saw three games of action with the AHL affiliate of the Canucks, the Utica Comets, where he was held pointless.
